Who We Are and What We're About
Hi. I'm Jana Halwick. I am going to write this in the first person because I find it very odd that most of us write these ourselves, but feel compelled to write them in the third person. Also, I want to say things about my business partner, Kathryn Matlack, that she doesn't want to take responsibility for.
Kathryn and I serendipitously met through our children's school. Kathryn, educated as an engineer, is the Operations Manager of Phi Home Designs, who built the cabinetry and casework in Carver Hill and general contracted the project. Phi shares the back half of the five acre property with the gallery. When she's not working full time at Phi, Kathryn is the gallery's administrative guru. She keeps me organized, and actually enjoys charts, graphs and taxes. She has a methodical mind and a fantastic sense of humor. We laugh a lot this is important.
I attended art school, primarily studying photography. I am an aspiring painter with limited talent, so don't look for my paintings in the gallery. I have owned several retail stores, a wholesale clothing design company, and an art gallery. I am most likely the one you will see here.
Carver Hill opened in the fall of 2006. The idea behind the project was to create an inviting, non-intimidating home environment to view some of New England's finest art and craft. In a more typical home, art is used to "accessorize" the dwelling. We would like to create the home as art. Feasibly, someone can come into a room in our gallery and walk away with the entire concept. They may purchase everything from the art on the walls to the textiles, flooring and furniture. In a geographical area chock full of stunning galleries with discriminating clienteles, we are trying to complement them and stand apart at the same time.
Another very important personal focus for us is future sustainability and self reliance. We are starting very small, by installing solar panels on our Cider Barn Event Space, but would love to expand this idea in the future by adding a greenhouse/conservatory and growing organic food for chefs to create art in an environment of art. We are researching ways to use less electricity, and hope to add photovoltaic tiles to the roof on the main house in the near future.
The gallery has expanded outdoor and now features a rotating sculpture garden on the meticulously manicured grounds.
Thank you for your interest in our gallery. If we can answer any questions, please call us!
Jana and Kathryn
