Jean Victory currently resides in central Maine after moving back to her home state twelve years ago from Olympia, Washington. As a child she was given the opportunity to live and travel throughout the United States which sparked her interest in the landscape and art.
“My interest in art began at about age four. I remember telling everyone that I was going to become an artist when I grew up. My first gallery exhibition occurred when I was just thirteen years old in Omaha, Nebraska.”
Jean has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art, Cum Laude, from the University of Maine at Augusta and an Associate in Technical Arts degree in Commercial Art from Centralia College, Centralia, Washington.
Pastel is usually Jean’s medium of choice but a few years ago she decided to learn to paint in oils which she feels has enhanced her growth as an artist by providing a new set of challenges. “My recent body of work has resulted from direct observation of the subject. The objects in the still life are everyday items, but may be unfamiliar to some because of the vintage nature of the subject matter.” Most of these objects are placed in shallow space to create a sense of intimacy. The light is really the focus of the paintings with its reflections, highlights and shadows that it creates. The majority of these still life paintings are created on smaller supports to create a certain intimacy with the viewer.
