Marieluise Hutchinson was born just post World War II,
when American Patriotism was heartily celebrated and something her folks were deeply proud of. She spent her early years in the pastoral landscape of an 1820′s homestead with 11 acres of farmland on the South Shore of Boston. Her paintings reflect a do-it-yourself time of hard work and simple pleasures. They speak of American independence and fortitude. They represent places we have all been or seen, beautifully lit by the natural sunlight of vast clear skies.
Marieluise calls her paintings “Farmscapes”, and searches the New England countryside for worthy subjects to devote her attention and brush to. They usually lack the physical presence of people or animals, though it is obvious they are there – a light may be on, a door ajar, or an open window curtain billows in the breeze. The action itself is not shared with us, but its evidence is left for us to imagine the scene. “Every painting of mine tells a story,” she says. “You can look in the window and smell a pot roast in the oven and a fresh-baked apple pie and see a cat reclining on a rocking chair near the fireplace.”
All of New England’s romantic qualities are put before us on these panels, and each season is glorified. A gorgeous winter white blanket of snow is stenciled only with animal tracks – a trodden path has worn a route in an un-mowed fall field; Marieluise’s favorite places beckon us to come closer. Her paintings feel nostalgic, creating a strong sense of family values – integrity, tradition, and helping ones neighbor. Marieluise herself embodies those values, generously supporting a number of charitable causes.
Remarkably, Marieluise is a self taught artist. Her personal style developed from the careful consideration of her environment and the works of great painters. Close to forty years of old fashioned trial and error helped her to become the skilled and disciplined painter she is today. She is passionate and committed, and works tirelessly to make sure that each piece is a gem in mood and technique. She loves natural light, particularly the moments just before dusk.
“Everything I do is real,” says Hutchinson, a member of the Copley Society. “I’m always looking for structures to paint and they’re getting harder to find; they’re either falling down or getting torn down. That’s why I’m so drawn to Maine.” Marieluise Hutchinson alternates her residence and studio between Massachusetts and Cushing, Maine. She achieved Copley Artist in 2006.
