Artists » Mikhail Mikora

Mikhail Mikora was born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1964. He attended the Republican School of Art from 1976 – 1982, and immediately moved on to the Kiev Art Academy, graduating in 1990 from the Department of Monumental Painting. In 1994 he moved to Prague, and was deeply moved by the music and performing arts that permeate the historic city. In 2006 he received a grant from the Prague Municipality for his solo exhibition “Jazzart” in the Ukrainian Embassy. “Jazz for me is more than just music. It is the essence of art, free skill. It is a combination of extraordinary sensuality with methodic approach” – Mikhail Mikora

Mikhail Mikora paints in oil on linen in his studio, and ink and acrylic on paper when working from life. His music series features Jazz Artists such as Cecil Taylor playing in low lit, atmospheric night clubs in Europe, and classical musicians in string trios. Mikora’s work reflects the relationship between musicians and their audience, drawing inspiration from the energy. He insists on being present with the music in small, intimate environments. He sketches and paints “live” finishing the paper pieces in ink and acrylic on site. He frequently will use these plein-club paintings later as studies for larger pieces in oil.
